Impact of Embedded 163Ho on the Performance of the Transition-Edge Sensor Microcalorimeters of the HOLMES Experiment. 2025. DOI BibTeX@misc{bennett_impact_2025,
abstract = "We present a detailed investigation of the performance of transition-edge sensor (TES) microcalorimeters with \${\textasciicircum}\{163\}\$Ho atoms embedded by ion implantation, as part of the HOLMES experiment aimed at neutrino mass determination. The inclusion of \${\textasciicircum}\{163\}\$Ho atoms introduces an excess heat capacity due to a pronounced Schottky anomaly, which can affect the detector's energy resolution, signal height, and response time. We fabricated TES arrays with varying levels of \${\textasciicircum}\{163\}\$Ho activity and characterized their performance in terms of energy resolution, decay time constants, and heat capacity. The intrinsic energy resolution was found to degrade with increasing \${\textasciicircum}\{163\}\$Ho activity, consistent with the expected scaling of heat capacity. From the analysis, we determined the specific heat capacity of \${\textasciicircum}\{163\}\$Ho to be \$(2.9 {\textbackslash}pm 0.4 {\textbackslash}mathrm\{(stat)\} {\textbackslash}pm 0.7 {\textbackslash}mathrm\{(sys)\})\$ J/K/mol at \$(94 {\textbackslash}pm 1)\${\textbackslash},mK, close to the literature values for metallic holmium. No additional long decay time constants correlated with \${\textasciicircum}\{163\}\$Ho activity were observed, indicating that the excess heat capacity does not introduce weakly coupled thermodynamic systems. These results suggest that our present TES microcalorimeters can tolerate \${\textasciicircum}\{163\}\$Ho activities up to approximately 5 Bq without significant performance degradation. For higher activities, reducing the TES transition temperature is necessary to maintain energy resolution. These findings provide critical insights for optimizing TES microcalorimeters for future neutrino mass experiments and other applications requiring embedded radioactive sources. The study also highlights the robustness of TES technology in handling implanted radionuclides while maintaining high-resolution performance.",

Most Stringent Bound on Electron Neutrino Mass Obtained with a Scalable Low Temperature Microcalorimeter Array. 2025. DOI BibTeX@misc{alpert_most_2025,
abstract = "The determination of the absolute neutrino mass scale remains a fundamental open question in particle physics, with profound implications for both the Standard Model and cosmology. Direct kinematic measurements, independent of model-dependent assumptions, provide the most robust approach to address this challenge. In this Letter, we present the most stringent upper bound on the effective electron neutrino mass ever obtained with a calorimetric measurement of the electron capture decay of \${\textasciicircum}\{163\}\$Ho. The HOLMES experiment employs an array of ion-implanted transition-edge sensor (TES) microcalorimeters, achieving an average energy resolution of 6 eV FWHM with a scalable, multiplexed readout technique. With a total of \$7{\textbackslash}times10{\textasciicircum}7\$ decay events recorded over two months and a Bayesian statistical analysis, we derive an upper limit of \$m\_\{{\textbackslash}beta\}{$<$}27\$ eV/c\${\textasciicircum}2\$ at 90\% credibility. These results validate the feasibility of \${\textasciicircum}\{163\}\$Ho calorimetry for next-generation neutrino mass experiments and demonstrate the potential of a scalable TES-based microcalorimetric technique to push the sensitivity of direct neutrino mass measurements beyond the current state of the art.",

abstract = "We present a comprehensive phenomenological analysis of the calorimetric electron capture (EC) decay spectrum of 163Ho as measured by the HOLMES experiment. Using high-statistics data, we unfold the instrumental energy resolution from the measured spectrum and model it as a sum of Breit-Wigner resonances and shake-off continua, providing a complete set of parameters for each component. Our approach enables the identification and tentative interpretation of all observed spectral features, including weak and overlapping structures, in terms of atomic de-excitation processes. We compare our phenomenological model with recent \{{\textbackslash}it ab initio\} theoretical calculations, finding good agreement for both the main peaks and the spectral tails, despite the limitations of current theoretical and experimental precision. The model delivers an accurate description of the endpoint region, which is crucial for neutrino mass determination, and allows for a realistic treatment of backgrounds such as pile-up and tails of low-energy components. Furthermore, our decomposition facilitates the generation of Monte Carlo toy spectra for sensitivity studies and provides a framework for investigating systematic uncertainties related to solid-state and detector effects. This work establishes a robust foundation for future calorimetric neutrino mass experiments employing \${\textasciicircum}\{163\}\$Ho, supporting both data analysis and experimental design.",

abstract = "The HOLMES experiment aims to directly measure the {$\nu$} mass studying the 163Ho electron capture decay spectrum, using arrays of TES-based micro-calorimeters implanted with O(102 Bq/detector) 163Ho atoms. The neutron irradiation of 162Er enriched samples, used for the production of 163Ho, also generates radioactive contaminants. Chemical processes have been developed to extract the Ho fraction with high efficiency. The radioactive Ho isotope 166mHo is also present in the final sample and could significantly contribute to background events in the final spectrum. For this reason a dedicated implantation/mass separator has been set up and commissioned. It is designed to achieve more than 5 {$\sigma$} separation 163/166 u simultaneously allowing an efficient 163Ho atoms embedding inside micro-calorimeter absorbers. Its main components are a 50 kV sputter-based ion source, a magnetic dipole and a target chamber. A specially designed co-evaporation system has been implemented to deposit gold on the detector absorbers during implantation to overcome the 163Ho source saturation problem. The system performances in terms of achievable beam current, profile and mass separation have been evaluated by means of calibration runs using Cu, Mo, Au and 165Ho beams. An intensive study was done to optimize the target containing 163Ho in order to achieve a large fraction of ionized Ho in the beam. In this work, the machine development and commissioning will be described.",

Both Josephson parametric amplifiers (JPAs) and traveling wave parametric amplifiers (TWPAs) have been used as first-stage amplifiers to enable readout chains operating within a few quanta or less of the quantum limit. These devices are also presently entering the commercial industry. However, nearly all demonstrations and existing products require bulky external microwave components for interconnection and application of requisite biases. These components -- cabling interconnects, bias tees, directional couplers, and diplexers -- increase the overall amplifier footprint, installation complexity, and reduce already limited available cryogenic volumes. Additionally, these components introduce loss and reflections which impact the measurement efficiency and readout system noise performance; thus making it more difficult to operate near the quantum limit. Here we present the design and validation of microfabricated bias tees and directional couplers for operating three-wave mixing kinetic inductance TWPAs (KITs). We report the performance of KITs integrated with the microfabricated rf components. Using these devices we demonstrate reduction in the amplifier installation footprint by a factor of nearly five and elimination of all external, lossy microwave components previously required to operate a KIT. Our device displays a 2.8 GHz 3 dB bandwidth with a median true gain of 17.5 dB and median system noise of 3.4 quanta. These efforts represent the first full integration of all rf components mandatory for TWPA operation on-chip. These amplifiers achieve remarkable performance in terms of gain, bandwidth, compression power, and frequently approach the quantum limit for noise. However, most KIT demonstrations have been isolated from practical device readout systems. Using a KIT as the first amplifier in the readout chain of an unoptimized microwave SQUID multiplexer coupled to a transition-edge sensor microcalorimeter we see an initial improvement in the flux noise. One challenge in KIT integration is the considerable microwave pump power required to drive the non-linearity. To address this, we have initiated efforts to reduce the pump power by using thinner NbTiN films and an inverted microstrip transmission line design. In this article, we present the new transmission line design, fabrication procedure, and initial device characterization -- including gain and added noise. These devices exhibit over 10 dB of gain with a 3 dB bandwidth of approximately 5.5-7.25 GHz, a maximum practical gain of 12 dB and typical gain ripple under 4 dB peak-to-peak. We observe an appreciable impedance mismatch in the NbTiN transmission line, which is likely the source of the majority of the gain ripple. The electrical resistance of the Ti/TiN film was characterized from room temperature down to the superconducting transition. Both the resistivity just above the transition and the critical temperature were investigated as a function of the total film thickness and the single TiN layer thickness, respectively. The obtained resistivity range is 67–312 μΩ cm. Exploiting the proximity effect, we were able to tune the critical temperature in the 0.29–4.5 K range. A comparison between experimental data and theoretical models is proposed in order to facilitate the a priori design of superconducting detectors." }
