The Beta Environmental Fine Structure (BEFS) is a modulation of the electron emission probability due to the atomic and molecular surrounding of the decaying nucleus: it is explained by the wave structure of the electron in analogy with EXAFS. It has been suggested that this sensitivity of the beta decay to the atomic environment could be exploited for analytical purposes.
